Sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a vital component of modern building design, and there's a science to measuring it.
Today, the growing concern for our environment has led to a significant shift in how we approach building design. We've realised that the buildings we live in can have a huge impact on our world, and as a result, sustainability has become a key focus in residential architecture. But how do we measure sustainability in buildings? What standards or certifications can we use to ensure that our homes are as green as possible?

In conclusion, there are numerous certifications and standards available to measure the sustainability of buildings. LEED, BREEAM, Passive House, HERS Index, and NGBS are just a few examples. These tools not only help to ensure that our homes are designed and built with the environment in mind, but they also provide a benchmark for sustainability, allowing us to continually strive for better, more sustainable building practices. By choosing a home that meets these standards, you're not just choosing a more sustainable lifestyle, but you're also contributing to a more sustainable future for our planet.

There are several certifications and standards that are globally recognised for measuring sustainability in buildings. One of the most renowned is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a rating system devised by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage market transformation towards sustainable design.
Another important certification is the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). This UK-based certification assesses the sustainability of buildings against a range of criteria, including energy use, water use, waste management, pollution, and materials used.
In addition, the Passive House standard, a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, is also widely recognised. This standard reduces the building's ecological footprint and results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling.
The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is another tool to measure a home's energy efficiency. The lower the score, the more energy-efficient the home is.
Finally, the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) provides a blueprint for builders to follow for the design and construction of new and renovated single-family homes and townhomes. This standard covers aspects such as lot design, preparation and development, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality.
