Imagine the birth of your new home or extension, where the seeds of your ideas start to take shape - that's the concept design phase.

The concept design phase is a critical stage in the architectural process. It's a time when your ideas, needs, and the potential of your site begin to merge into a tangible design. This phase is all about exploration and discovery, where the Architect uses their creativity and expertise to translate your vision into a conceptual design. The focus is on residential extensions and new build homes, ensuring that each design is a unique reflection of the client's ambitions and values.

The concept design phase usually begins with a detailed discussion between the client and the Architect. During these consultations, the Architect learns about the client's lifestyle, preferences, and the functionality they desire in their home. This information forms the basis of the design brief. The Architect then conducts a site analysis to understand the constraints and opportunities presented by the location. This includes studying the topography, climate, views, neighbouring properties, and local building regulations.

Once the design brief and site analysis are complete, the Architect starts generating initial design ideas. These are usually presented as rough sketches, showing the layout and spatial relationships within the home. The Architect will also consider the form and massing of the building, how it sits on the site, and how it interacts with its surroundings.

As the design evolves, the Architect will use 3D models and computer-generated visualisations to help the client understand the design. This is an interactive process, with the client providing feedback, and the Architect refining the design accordingly. The goal is to create a concept design that aligns with the client's vision, while also responding to the site and local context.

During this phase, the Architect will also provide an initial estimate of the construction cost. This helps the client understand the financial implications of their design decisions and allows them to make informed choices. The concept design phase ends when the client is happy with the design, and gives their approval to proceed to the next stage of the architectural process.
