From Headache to Dream Home: How We Rescued a 'Renovation Gone Wrong'

What was supposed to be a dream home project had become a headache for our clients. The project had already gone wrong!

A home renovation was underway, but the design had fallen short - a visually disconnected garden, no lateral stability, uncoordinated structure, and no party wall agreement in place. Our clients loved their home, especially with excellent schools nearby for their young children. They had decided to improve and not move, but feared that this had backfired. They had wanted modern elements like exposed steel beams and a kitchen island, but previous designers had claimed there wasn’t enough room or this was not possible. Golden Triangle Architects were brought in to take over, understanding the need to salvage the existing build while elevating the design in line with the family’s original vision.

We replaced a problematic structural proposal with an exposed steel goalpost arrangement. This solution not only addressed the issue with structural coordination but also avoided protracted party wall negotiations. To maximise the apparent volume of the space, we proposed knocking through from the kitchen into the living area, creating five distinct but connected spaces. We combined the existing rear windows and doors into a larger crittall folding door. Most importantly, we incorporated the island the clients had previously been told wasn’t possible. In the end, the proposal created a space that matched the family’s vision and significantly boosted the property’s value.

The additional investment in design had paid off and a failing project had become something our clients could look forward to living and growing up in.
